More than 2,500 Twitter accounts have been compromised according to a recent report. The revelations show that the compromised accounts were used to send out malicious tweets so that they could promote some adult dating websites and pornographic content. It's also "temporarily disabling the username search function and masking usernames of any users we believe were affected by the security issue."The spokesman also said: "At this time, there is no evidence that any financial information or passwords were compromised."He admitted, however, that the company still doesn't know the full extent of the attack. Which of them might get threats of blackmail from anonymous types who are now in possession of deeply compromising information? So many companies have been subject to data breaches that it seems no one is safe.

Whether borne by indolence or inventiveness, that tactic is surely enough to ruin the romance along with someone's reputation on the social networking site. In either case, the fraudsters never delete any pictures uploaded by the original account owners. Doing so brings them to a website controlled by the attackers, where the scams reach their climax.

That means attackers modify the hacked accounts' username, write a different bio, and upload new pictures of a sexually suggestive nature, in addition to making other modifications.

For some reason, a few of the hacked accounts don't try as hard to close the deal.

One of the accounts belonged to the electro-funk band Chromeo while the other account was believed to be one international journalist affiliated with the Telegraph.

The company also said that as part of their investigation, they noticed that Twitter accounts which belonged to stand-up comedian Azeem Banatwala, Cecil Shorts, the Houston Texans wide receiver, and also the late New York Times reporter David Cart had also been compromised.
